Private Johnson Beharry VCThe true cost of Valour

Private Johnson Beharry was awarded the country's highest award for valour on the battlefield following his oustanding acts of bravery in Iraq. The Daily Telegraph recently featured an article about this brave young man which you can find here.

This article makes very interesting reading and reflects the impact 'Active Service' can have on even the bravest of the brave.

The County would like to thank all of those branches who made a contribution to the purchase cost and without whose help it would not have been possible. Many thanks to all concerned.

Poppy SupportClick to enlargeOne in six people is eligible for Poppy Support - the new name for all the Legion's welfare services. To mark the occasion a giant 6 x 6 metre poppy made up of thousands of individual images was displayed in Victoria Station, London . Web Site success stories

Over recent months we have received two requests for help firstly, in photographing the headstone of Midshipman Powell and secondly in tracing the relatives of Flt Lt O'Neill.

With your help and that of the BBC Radio Cornwall, the web site has become more prominent and we have been successful in providing a solution to both requests.

Many thanks to all of those who helped.

The second Royal British Legion Cornwall County Golf tournament was once again held at Newquay Golf Club on 16 August 2006. A total of 7 teams competed for the Skinners Poppy Ale Trophy which this year was won by 829 Squadron, RNAS Culdrose. In second place, only one point behind, was Newquay RBL Club. Despite a poor forecast and heavy rain in the area, only a couple of short showers fell on the golf course and all players came in dry and with some impressive scores. Skinners brewery kindly sponsored the liquid prizes while Seniors Golf provided the winners medals and each competitor was given a poppy emblem ball marker.  A bottle raffle in aid of Legion welfare in Cornwall raised £60. Simon Coy the RBL County president presented the prizes and he stressed the importance of the Legion as a modern charity helping not just the old but also many young service personnel and highlighted the growing problem of homelessness in the County.

All Angels at the 2 minutes silence in Trafalgar Square

All Angels, the classical girlgroup, are to release the first ever Christmas single in aid of The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. The girls have recorded a version of Robbie Williams’ Angels, which is set for release on 18th December and is being tipped by William Hill and HMV to be Christmas number one! The song, originally penned by Guy Chambers, has been beautifully arranged for the girls.

All Angels are Laura, Melanie, Charlotte and Daisy, and have been chosen from thousands of girls auditioned to form the first ever classical girlgroup. They are the best singers of their age in Britain, and bring a fresh new sound – and a bright new look - to classical crossover music, with a repertoire spanning classical, choral, opera and pop.

The Penzance Poppy Appeal

Penzance

The County Marquee was in evidence at Penzance last weekend as the Poppy Appeal was brought to the forefront. RBL volunteers manned the displays and were on hand to answer questions about The Legion, the Poppy Appeal and how the money is used to help the ex-service community. This year Cornwall hopes to raise £320,00 towards the national target of £26million. The event was supported with Miltary vehicles and an air drop of poppy leaves.
